Are You Expecting? Prepare For Your New Baby with Pre- and Post-Natal Rehab!
Are you expecting a child right now? Pregnancy is a joyful time for many women, but the body is going through a lot of changes as it grows a new tiny person! Pregnant women experience changes in posture, higher amounts of pelvic floor stress, ligament stretching and thickening.
These changes in the body can also create back discomfort and pelvic floor problems, as well as muscular weakness, which can lead to urinary incontinence and difficulty activating the core muscles.
Pregnancy may be a normal part of life, but it sometimes comes with discomfort and pain. Prenatal and postnatal therapy can make it considerably more comfortable. We mix therapies like massage therapy and pelvic floor treatment at Orthopedic Sports Therapy to make pregnancy, delivery and recovery as easy as possible.
Many new mothers begin seeing a physical therapist within 6 weeks of giving birth, and some even sooner!
Our objective at our physical therapy clinics in Ahwatukee, Biltmore and Tempe, AZ is to help you prepare your body for the trip ahead so that you can focus on welcoming your new baby into this world.
Whether you are an expectant mother or one who has recently given birth, don’t hesitate to contact us at Orthopedic Sports Therapy today! We will help make your pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery as easy for you as possible.
Common pregnancy pain problems
Orthopedic Sports Therapy can help mothers deal with pre and postnatal problems as their bodies experience the effects of pregnancy and childbirth.
Some of the most common symptoms that expecting or new mother’s experience are:
- Urinary or fecal incontinence
- Inability to fully empty the bladder
- Pain during sex
- Dyspareunia
- Prolapse, or the sensation that the organs are “dropping”
- Constipation
- Low back pain
These symptoms may seem worrisome at first, but the good news is that you have treatment available to relieve your pain, and avoid it from coming back in the future if you are having these symptoms.
What about scarring after giving birth?
By including physical therapy into your prenatal and postnatal treatment, you will be better prepared for one of life’s most difficult challenges: giving birth and caring for a baby.
Scarring from tears, episiotomies and C-sections is fairly prevalent during pregnancy. This scarring often decreases mobility of the involved tissue, resulting in pelvic floor muscle weakness, limited range of motion and discomfort.
To eliminate these restrictions and avoid further weakening of the pelvic system, our physical therapists in Ahwatukee, Biltmore and Tempe, AZ employ unique myofascial and scar-release procedures.
Diastasis recti, often known as abdominal separation, can also be a postpartum problem. Diastasis recti can prevent stomach muscle strengthening and result in what some refer to as a “pooch” after pregnancy. (Diastasis Recti can also occur in men and women of all ages, regardless of pregnancy, due to abdominal muscle weakness. PT can treat that too!)
Our therapists can diagnose and treat your prenatal and postnatal pain using the strongest evidence-based clinical practices available!
We carry out our treatment plans with compassion, concern, and understanding, so you can be confident that no matter what stage of your pregnancy you are in, we will look after you and do everything possible to ensure the best possible outcome!
